Registering a Vehicle

Registering a Vehicle

If you decide to buy a vehicle, it will need to be taxed. Most dealers will do this for you if the vehicle is new. If the dealer won’t do this, it can be done via the DVLA website

If you have purchased a used vehicle it needs to be taxed and verified with a V5C registration certificate aka the ‘log book’.

The DVLA advises that if the vehicle does not have a ‘log book’ (V5C), you should not purchase the vehicle.

If the vehicle does have a ‘log book’ the seller can register the vehicle to you online or by post. Check the DVLA website for more details.

You might also like to register your vehicle with the DVLA to receive reminders about when the MOT is due. Once a vehicle is 3 years old, it must get an MOT every year otherwise run the risk of a £1,000 fine if you drive a vehicle without one.

Having a checkable MOT history may also be an advantage when selling a vehicle as proof of historical road worthiness or if any significant mechanical repairs were carried out.
